The following food stamp recipients are not required to register to work:

  • People under age 16
  • People who are disabled to work
  • People age 16 or 17 who live with a parent
  • People who attend school full time
  • People age 60 or older
  • People who are employed or self-employed full time
  • People who care for a dependent child under age 6 or a disabled person of any age
  • People who are receiving unemployment benefits

All other food stamp recipients must register for work. Work registrants must:

The Food Stamp Employment and Training Program

The Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS) has contracted with the Arkansas Department of Workforce Education (DWE) to administer a Food Stamp E&T Program in certain counties. In these counties individuals who are subject to the Requirement to Work will be referred to the Food Stamp Employment and Training Program. (See the back of this page for information about the Requirement to Work.)

The Food Stamp Employment and Training Program is designed to help people find a job. There is no cost for attending the Food Stamp E&T Program. People who participate in the Food Stamp Employment and Training Program may be provided with:

  • Basic job skills
  • Job-related vocational training
  • Help in completing the high school equivalency (GED)
  • Assistance in finding a job

The following members of your household will be referred to the Food Stamp Employment and Training Program.

The Food Stamp Program Requirement to Work

Unless they are exempt, people between the ages of 18 and 49 who get food stamp benefits must meet the requirement to work. You are exempt from the requirement to work if:

How to Meet the Requirement to Work

To meet the requirement to work, you must work at least 20 hours each week at a job or a self-employment enterprise. Or, you may participate in a Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Program or a Trade Adjustment Act (TRA) Program for at least 20 hours each week. If you participate in the Food Stamp Employment and Training Program, you meet the requirement to work. If you participate in the Food Stamp Workfare Program, you meet the requirement to work.

What Happens if You Don’t Meet the Requirement to Work

If you do not meet the requirement to work during any three months out of a designated 36-month period, you may be disqualified to receive food stamp benefits. The disqualification will last for the rest of the 36-month period

If you are disqualified, you may end the disqualification by complying with the requirement to work. To show compliance, a person must work 80 hours or more or must participate in a WIA or TRA Program for 80 hours or more during a 30-day period.

Retain the DCO-260 for three years from the month of origin.
