What
are the qualifications to become an AmeriCorps member?
To be eligible to serve in AmeriCorps a
person must be at least 18, a citizen or a legal resident of
the United States and have a high school diploma or GED.
It is possible to serve in AmeriCorps at age 17 with
permission from a parent or legal guardian.
It is also possible to serve without a high school
diploma or GED if the person agrees to work towards the GED
during the term of service.
There is no upper age limit on AmeriCorps service.
Some programs may have additional
requirements. AmeriCorps*NCCC,
for example, will accept applicants only between the ages of
18 and 24. Contact
the program for further details.

How do you become an AmeriCorps member?
You become an AmeriCorps member by
completing an application form, submitting it to a specific
program and being accepted by that program.
Visit the AmeriCorps
Website. Click
on the “Join AmeriCorps” link at the bottom of the page,
and then click on “Find a Program.”
After finding the program(s) of greatest interest to
you, contact them to be sure they are recruiting and placing
members. Then
click on “Apply Now” to download the application form,
complete it and send it to the program, along with any other
information the program requires. If you do not have access to the Internet or if you get lost
along the way, call the Arkansas Service Commission (501-682-7540) for
assistance.

The Arkansas Commission does not recruit or place
AmeriCorps members, but can help you determine which
AmeriCorps resources are best for your community and help
you get them.

How can we get AmeriCorps resources in our community?
If you want AmeriCorps* VISTA, contact Opal
Sims, Director of the State Office of the
Corporation for National and Community Service
(501-324-5234). If you would like to have an AmeriCorps*
National Civilian Community Corps team of ten members to
help in your community for two to eight weeks, contact Michelle
Royall at the South Carolina campus (843-743-2600).
