What are the qualifications to become an AmeriCorps member?

To be eligible to serve in AmeriCorps a person must be at least 18, a citizen or a legal resident of the United States and have a high school diploma or GED.  It is possible to serve in AmeriCorps at age 17 with permission from a parent or legal guardian.  It is also possible to serve without a high school diploma or GED if the person agrees to work towards the GED during the term of service.  There is no upper age limit on AmeriCorps service.

Some programs may have additional requirements.  AmeriCorps*NCCC, for example, will accept applicants only between the ages of 18 and 24.  Contact the program for further details.

How do you become an AmeriCorps member?

You become an AmeriCorps member by completing an application form, submitting it to a specific program and being accepted by that program.  Visit the AmeriCorps Website.  Click on the “Join AmeriCorps” link at the bottom of the page, and then click on “Find a Program.”  After finding the program(s) of greatest interest to you, contact them to be sure they are recruiting and placing members.  Then click on “Apply Now” to download the application form, complete it and send it to the program, along with any other information the program requires.  If you do not have access to the Internet or if you get lost along the way, call the Arkansas Service Commission  (501-682-7540) for assistance.

Can the Arkansas Service Commission provide some AmeriCorps members to help in our community?

The Arkansas Commission does not recruit or place AmeriCorps members, but can help you determine which AmeriCorps resources are best for your community and help you get them.

How can we get AmeriCorps resources in our community?

If you want AmeriCorps* VISTA, contact Opal Sims, Director of the State Office of the Corporation for National and Community Service (501-324-5234). If you would like to have an AmeriCorps* National Civilian Community Corps team of ten members to help in your community for two to eight weeks, contact Michelle Royall at the South Carolina campus (843-743-2600). If you want information on starting an AmeriCorps* program in your community, or you are not sure where to start, contact a staff member at the Arkansas Service Commission, or contact ASC Director, Al Schneider.
