Passage of an Oral examination Removed from CPQ Requirements

As of June 1, 2006, passage of an oral examination will no longer be a requirement for obtaining the CPQ. Please contact the CPQ department for more information.

General CPQ Requirements

Threshold Requirements

Applicant must:

1.   Possess a current license or registration to practice psychology at the independent level in an ASPPB member jurisdiction where such license or registration is based on receipt of a doctoral degree in psychology; and

2.   Have a record of practicing psychology at the independent level for at least five (5) years in an ASPPB member jurisdiction; and

      3.   Have no history of disciplinary actions (e.g. revocation, suspension, restriction)
            in any jurisdiction. 

Educational Requirements

The doctoral degree in psychology must be obtained from an institution of higher education that was, at the time the degree was awarded, regionally accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or authorized by Canadian provincial statute or Royal Charter to grant doctoral degrees and was, at the time the degree was awarded, either:

1.   Accredited by the American Psychological Association or the Canadian Psychological Association, or designated as a psychology program by the Joint Designation Committee of the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards and the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology; or

2.   Based upon a program of three years of full-time (or equivalent) graduate study not including predoctoral internship; be clearly identified and labeled as a psychology program; be an integrated, organized sequence of study; have included at least one year of full-time residency at the institution granting the doctoral degree; have an identifiable psychology faculty and a psychologist responsible for the program; have included appropriate supervised practicum, internship, field or laboratory experience; and have included the equivalent of at least three semester hours or five quarter hours of instruction in each of the following content areas of graduate training:

1.        scientific and professional ethics and standards

2.        research design and methodology

3.        statistics and psychometrics

4.        biological bases of behavior

5.        cognitive affective bases of behavior

6.        social bases of behavior, and individual differences.

Examination Requirements

A score at or above the ASPPB passing score (140 or 70% written, 500 computerized) on the EPPP and passage of an oral exam/interview to determine competence to practice. (May be remediated if lacking.)

Supervised Experience Requirements

1.   Two years of supervised experience, one of which was postdoctoral, for a minimum of 3,000 total hours.

2.   Each year [or equivalent] shall be comprised of at least 1,500 hours of actual work, to include direct service, training, and supervisory time.

3.   A predoctoral internship/residency may count as one of the two years of experience.

At a minimum, supervision shall be one hour per week of one-to-one supervision from a licensed psychologist; in the case of geographical or confirmed physical hardship, less frequent supervision sessions may be considered, providing a minimum of four hours per month of one-to-one supervision was maintained. (May be remediated if lacking.)
